Care and Processing Instructions
- Unbox as soon as it arrives. Eucalyptus is tough, but it ships dry-packed and wants water quickly.
- Strip every leaf that would sit below the water line. Submerged eucalyptus foliage rots fast and fouls the water for everything sharing the bucket.
- Split the woody stems. Recut on a sharp diagonal, taking an inch off, then split the bottom inch of the stem up the middle with your knife. Eucalyptus stems are woody and a flat cut alone doesn't let them drink properly.
- Stand the stems in lukewarm water with flower food. Lukewarm, not cold — woody stems take up warm water far faster.
- If the leaf tips look soft on arrival, leave the stems in deep water for a few hours before you do anything else. They draw back up.
- Never let eucalyptus freeze. It tolerates cold storage down to around 38°F but freezing destroys the foliage outright.
- Change the water and recut every 2 to 3 days.
- One professional note: water-stressed eucalyptus releases ethylene, and ethylene shortens the life of sensitive flowers stored beside it. Keep eucalyptus properly hydrated in the cooler and it's a non-issue — but don't leave dry-packed bunches sitting next to your carnations or freesia.
- To dry it, hang a bunch upside down somewhere dark and airy. Eucalyptus dries in place and holds its shape, so arrangements age gracefully rather than collapsing.
